This was the first time the Southern Co-operative had included a farm tour as part of its membership events programme and it was hugely popular, there are still over 200 members on a waiting list to come to the next tour!
Chris, our dairy farmer, kicked off the tour with an overview of the day-to-day running of the farm, from 2am milking to lunchtime grazing.
We then headed over to our maternity yard which was met with much delight, as we spotted a number of new born calves taking shade from the sunshine – with one or two only hours old.
Our tour group were then introduced to the different breeds of cow we have here which are Holstein Friesian cross bred with Brown Swiss and Swedish Red.
The next stop on the tour was the ice cream parlour, to learn how we make our delicious handmade ice cream. From the parlour to the pot, it was time for the ice cream tasting – everyone lined up for a taste of our National Award Winning flavours; for ice cream with Gold Medals Salted Caramel and Toffee & Honeycomb, Silver Medal winner Mascarpone & Amarena Cherry Marbling and our Bronze Medal winner Alphonso Mango Sorbet.
To round up the day, the Southern Co-operative treated everyone to a pot of our ice cream which was enjoyed out on the lawn in the glorious sunshine!
